Biography

David Philips (a.k.a. Da Paul) is a singer/songwriter/session musician who has been working professionally in the music industry since 1990. Since then he has been involved in various TV promotions, showcases, recordings and tours.



DaPaul has recorded, performed and arranged songs for such performers as GABRIELLE, DES’REE, ETERNAL, LOUISE, MN8, MICHELLE GAYLE, CLEOPATRA and ALEXANDER O'NEAL, JHELISA ANDERSON, SOULFUL STATE, RHONDA THOMAS and KLOUD 9 appearing on TOTP, ‘Jools Holland’, GMTV, National Lottery Live, VH1, and Pepsi Chart Show.

He has also arranged and performed songs alongside British Gospel artistes such as BEVERLY WINT, NATHAN PRIME, TONY CLARKE, DAVE DANIELS, IDMC CHOIR and VISUAL MINISTRIES CHOIR as well as appearing on the TV program ‘MY FAVOURITE HYMN’.

In 1998 he worked alongside legendary Alternative Hip-Hop artiste JHELISA ANDERSON, appearing with her on two occasions, once at the 'North Sea Jazz Festival' and at the 'Jazz Cafe'.

DaPaul also performed live with ‘DES’REE’ in 1999 at the World Music Awards, Monaco. DES’REE won a World Music Award and BRIT award in 1999.

 

In 1999 -2002 He also joined the No.1 UK selling artist ‘GABRIELLE’ as part of her band as keyboard player and backing vocalist. See credits for further details.

After completing a music teaching degree at Metropolitan University in 2005, his recent collaborations as additional keyboardist have been with the Soulful House production outfit ‘Soulful State’ who released their classic floor-filler single 'In The Sun' in summer 2006.

DaPaul was the musical director for RHONDA THOMAS who toured the U.K. in March/April 2006 to promote her album 'Breathe New Life'. Most recently in 2008 he has worked live with Kloud 9, an R&B/Jazz duo from Nashville, Tennesse promoting their album ‘On Kloud 9’ and forthcoming single ‘Enjoy the Ride’.

DaPaul has also been part of the Sense of Sound Choir performing at the sold-out season of ‘Monkey - Journey to the West’ at London’s Royal Opera House in July 2008.  ‘Monkey – Journey to the West’ is a stage adaptation of the 16th Century Chinese novel Journey to the West, by Wu Cheng'en. It was conceived and created by the Chinese actor and director Chen Shi-zheng, together with the British musician Damon Albarn and British artist Jamie Hewlett.
